Nanotechnology allows for the creation of hybrid materials at the nanoscale. Hybrid materials can be anisotropic, and comprise different materials as building blocks. The goal of such materials could be for example to achieve specific anisotropic material properties based on chemically prepared nanostructures, and to explore the emerging material properties by specific physical investigations in combination with theoretical modelling. This could allow for developping innovative methods to tailor the shape and function of nanoscopic systems by using modern concepts of inorganic, macromolecular and theoretical chemistry. Further complexity could be achieved by adding techniques for macroscopic assemblies and oriented arrangements of the nanostructures to demonstrate the applicability of the respective material properties to macroscopic functional devices. Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: Synthesis of hybrid particles Synthesis of anisotropic particles Self assembly of particle-particle complexes Analysis methods to characterize hybrid particles Biological applications Photo-catalytic applications Multi-functionality of particles for imaging, treatment, diagnosis, etc.
