Multiple studies have demonstrated that active learning pedagogies in science courses lead to positive student outcomes. These benefits include higher test scores and final grades, better understanding and retention of content, lower withdrawal rates, and more positive attitudes toward science. Various techniques can be used to integrate active learning into any classroom setting. These methods can be incorporated into traditional lectures, used to flip the classroom, promote collaborative learning, or scaffold the construction of knowledge. This symposium features presentations by organic chemistry faculty who have successfully implemented active learning strategies in their courses. Presentations that address the challenges of implementing active learning and provide an in-depth analysis of assessment practices are also encouraged.
